“AAM is leveraging LIFT to meet and exceed legislative objectives for CO2 reduction and fuel efficiency objectives,” said Nichols. “Our work with LIFT will allow us Deliver POWER faster, smarter and cleaner.”

American Axle & Manufacturing joined local and state officials along with area manufacturing leaders to celebrate the opening of a new R&D facility focused on lightweight metals and advanced composites in downtown Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood.

The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) and Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (LIFT) invested nearly $50 million in the facility, which allows member companies and partners the opportunity to conduct R&D projects in both lightweight metals and advanced composites onsite using the facilities extensive machinery and lab space.

The 100,000 sq.-ft. facility includes a high bay with manufacturing and applied research and development space for project work or other research.

As a leader in the development of lightweight driveline and powertrain technologies, AAM is a member of LIFT and will use the facility to help further lightweighting activities.

AAM’s Jeffrey Nichols, Executive Director of Advanced Technology Integration and Global Business Development, spoke at the event.

“This commitment is enabling our industries to accelerate key technology initiatives that we can collectively share and adopt in automotive, aerospace, off highway, agriculture and defense, that will instill technology leadership for America,” said Nichols.

Recently named to lead the LIFT technology development committee, Nichols will work with LIFT technology leaders and industry members to develop and prioritize research and development initiatives.

“AAM is leveraging LIFT to meet and exceed legislative objectives for CO2 reduction and fuel efficiency objectives,” said Nichols. “Our work with LIFT will allow us Deliver POWER faster, smarter and cleaner.”
